M-tech 8650 Clevo P151HM1 notebook W7 64 bit DNS Med 10.1 with KB 2011. I am not certain that KnowBrainer is the cause, but I am not able to close DNS when KB is open and it never happened before KB. I have to power off in order to close Dragon. Any suggestions? See error attachment. Thank you.

Garrison, As long as you have an application that is actively engaging (linked or hooked to), you will not be able to shut down Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I'll let Lunis go into more detail, but basically close KnowBrainer first, then you will be able to close down Dragon NaturallySpeaking. You can always, and you should, save your user profile if you can't completely shut down Dragon under any circumstance. Nevertheless, I believe that if you load Dragon via loading KnowBrainer, then shutting down KnowBrainer also shuts down Dragon. I just don't have KnowBrainer installed on this system and, because I use VoicePower which has the same problem but which has a startup/shutdown utility that automatically closes Dragon and saves your user profile, I always launch KnowBrainer separately, so I can't recall exactly what KB 2011 does and doesn't do if you launch Dragon via KnowBrainer. In addition, if you're going to post an attachment in this forum, be aware of the fact that it has to be in a format that can be opened by other users. I don't recognize the format that you're using (i.e., the extension), but is inaccessible to anyone wishing to view it. Lunis may be able to clarify which file formats are supported, but if you're trying to attach a screen capture, be sure to save it as a JPEG (jpg) or PNG. Since we can't see your error (i.e., can't open up your error file attachment), there may be another issue here. However, the above is the most common reason. KnowBrainer shouldn't prevent NaturallySpeaking from closing but if NaturallySpeaking is exited before closing KnowBrainer it will cause a harmless error. The most efficient solution is to say Close KnowBrainer which will exit KnowBrainer, close NaturallySpeaking and save your user files; all-in-one shot. If you don't wish to save your user files say Close KnowBrainer Without Saving.

I have been experiencing an inconsistent problem somewhat along the same lines, when I give a voice command to close KnowBrainer with DNS 10.1 Medical running. About half the time the shutdown process will go smoothly and both programs will shut down smoothly. I will hear the computer voice telling me what is going on. The other half of the time, KB shuts down and I then have to give an additional voice command to shut down DNS. Is this also because DNS is still running some process?

Garrison, 1. The first and the easiest is to simply re-save your user profile. This will clear the , usually, the tb folder and the second time that you attempt to save your user profile disabled go through and complete properly. 2. On occasion, the folder cannot or does not get cleared when you make a second attempt to save your user profile. In this case, simply go to the location specified above and delete the "\tb" folder, or delete the files contained within it. It doesn't matter if you delete the entire folder because Dragon NaturallySpeaking will re-created the next time that you save your user profile(s). Nevertheless, you can do it either way. 1. The above error message was taken from Windows XP and DNS 10.1 Medical. The version of Dragon doesn't matter, but the path does because the path to this folder in Windows XP is different from the path of this folder in Windows Vista/Windows 7. So, if you compare the above screen capture to yours that you attached, you'll notice that the paths are different. That doesn't make any difference because the problem is the same, it's just the location of the folder that differs between Windows XP and Windows Vista/Windows 7. I gave you the right path for Windows Vista/Windows 7 at the top of this post. 2. When this error occurs, always try re-saving your user profile first before you do anything else. If you simply assume that your user profile cannot be saved and you close Dragon without saving such, then you lose one ever changes, corrections or modifications that you made during that dictation session. While your corrections are always stored so that they will be added (adapted) to your user profile when you run the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer, any words that you added to the vocabulary you can simply kiss goodbye and you will have to re-add them. Unfortunately, there's no way to recover from that. Also, the next time that you load Dragon NaturallySpeaking, unless you run the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer, any changes, modifications, or corrections that you did in the previous dictation session will not be in your loaded user profile. Therefore, you'll be back to square one with a user profile that was current prior to your previous dictation session. So, follow the procedures above whenever this particular problem comes up. Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don't. - Pete Seeger -------------------------

Chuck, Whilst I happen always to do what you recommend in your post (and have never had the problem the second time around), that is a masterful explanation, for which many thanks. I have only ever had it in XP, never in Windows 7. I had this problem intermittently recently and tried a repair etc. This helped for a while but it happened again and on looking at my user folders I found that the /tb folder was full of files. Remembering from the dim and distant past that this folder should be empty, I deleted it and so far have not had the problem again ------------------------- Jomark |

Normally when you receive this error, all you have to do is attempt to save your user files again. If all goes right, NaturallySpeaking should reattempt flushing (as Chuck elegantly outlined in an earlier portion of this thread) the tb folder which normally works. We have seen some instances where Windows will prevent a folder flush and in this situation, your only choice is to reboot because you won't be able to manually delete the contents of the folder either. Everything should work after a reboot but as a last resort, it never hurts to manually delete the contents of the tb folder because this is exactly what NaturallySpeaking is supposed to do each time you save your user files.
