Hello I haven't been here for a while because DNS (10.1) has been working well. However, I have now started getting very poor recognition and missed words. I've done the routine Accuracy Centre set up, but this hasn't helped. I suspect corrupted files. I'm guessing that perhaps the best / quickest / easiest thing to do is to re-load DNS, but does anyone have any suggestions before I do this. If I do start again, I would like to save my Commands and Words, so that I can import them once I'm up and running again. I can find Commands and save a copy, but I'm having a problem exporting Words to save them. When I select 'Words' and 'Export' I am taken to 'C:/Program Files/Nuance/Naturally Speaking 10/Program' which I'm pretty sure isn't where I want to be. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I have Dragon Preferred 10 on CD and I subsequently downloaded 10.1. If I start again, am I right in thinking I can go onto the DNS website, quote my Serial Number and download 10.1? Or, maybe, it's time to go to the latest version, which I have deferred from doing until now, because my current version has been working so well. Cheers. Jeremy |

Did you go the extra step of pressing the Play button while running the Audio Setup Wizard, in the last stage, to verify that you don't have a problem with your sound system or suffering from interference? You want to rule out a frayed cable or interference while you are right there.
You might begin by performing a Repair of Preferred 10 rather than uninstalling and reinstalling. If you choose this approach, you'll want to click the Add/Remove Programs applet in your Windows XP Control Panel. However, the only reason we know this is because of the default address you listed when attempting to export your vocabulary. Note that the reason why this forum has a Member Profile section is so that those of us trying to assist you don’t have to figure out what operating system you're using or your computer specs. Filling out your Member Profile can save all of us time when dealing with DNS issues. You can add this information to your profile by clicking My Options followed by Personal Info. As far as exporting your personal vocabulary is concerned… The reason why NaturallySpeaking chose the C:\program files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking 10\program folder is because that folder just happens to be the last folder you opened in Windows Explorer. However, it doesn't matter where NaturallySpeaking automatically takes you because you are the administrator. All you have to do is type a name for your vocabulary file and choose your own address. We like the Desktop because the Desktop shortcut icon is one of the choices on the left side of the box and it makes it easy to locate your vocab when you want to import it. -------------------------

Many thanks Lunis. Yes, mea culpa, regarding my computer specification. I'm not sure what happened there because I think I filled out my Member Profile a few years ago, but there was nothing there when I checked a short while ago. I've entered the details now. I've checked for interference on my sound system. Everything sounds OK and I get a reading of 26. Showing my computer illiteracy, how do I do a repair of Preferred 10? I've checked in DNS Help Topics, but couldn't find anything there. I'm also not sure where to find my vocabulary file within All Users / Application Data / Nuance. I must have done it successfully sometime in the past because I've got a Text Document backed up to a memory stick which contains my Custom Words. However, that file is well out of date, so I'd like to find the current one. Jeremy |

To perform a repair of Preferred 10, click the Add/Remove programs applet in the Control Panel followed by clicking Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1 and selecting Change. Note that we may not have this exactly right because we've been using Windows 7 for quite a while but the previous instructions should be close.
You don't find your vocabulary; you export it via the DNS Words/Export menu; preferably to your desktop so you can easily locate it after create a new user profile so that you can reverse the process. -------------------------

Thanks again Lunis. I was having a dim 5 minutes regarding exporting my vocabulary. Got it now. I've tried repairing DNS 10.1, without success. I get the message in the first attachment below coming up. I've browsed for DNS 10.msi without success, having tried in my main Nuance folder in C drive, Nuance in Programs, and the folder where I keep my 10.1 download. When I closed down DNS yesterday I got the message in the second attachment below. Second time of closing worked OK. I think it's probably time to uninstall and install again, possibly moving to DNS 11.5. Jeremy |

I've browsed for DNS 10.msi without success, having tried in my main Nuance folder in C drive, Nuance in Programs, and the folder where I keep my 10.1 download. Jeremy, The download file for DNS 10.1 is a self extracting zip file. You won't find the *.MSI file in that downloaded file unless you extract all the files, which you can do. However, the simpler approach is simply to double-click on that file and run it. If you do that you will get the Dragon naturally speaking InstallShield Wizard with the options to Modify, Repair, or Remove. Simply choose Repair and let it run. Doing that will take care of any problems associated with the program files/installation. Because you install DNS 10.1 using the download file, the file that Windows is looking for (Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.msi) won't be found anywhere on your system. Again, simply rerun the DNS 10.1 installation by double-clicking on the DNS 10.1 executable file. It isn't necessary to wrap your leg around your neck by uninstalling and reinstalling. Quote: When you save your user profiles, DNS copies your user profiles to a temporary backup folder (\tb) when all of the data that is required to be merged during the save user operation has been completed, DNS normally purges this folder of all files used during the save operation. Occasionally, the files that are temporarily stored in this folder are not purged. All the files in this folder are protected from being overwritten so as to prevent corruption of your user profile when you're saving your user profile. If these files don't get purged, that's why you get the message that you show in your second attached document. If you read that message carefully you'll see why. Regardless, the very last entry in that error message is "Error Details: The file exists". All this means is that the file that DNS was attempting to \tb folder couldn't be copied because the file already existed and DNS prevents overwriting such files. As you found out, simply re-saving your user profile clears this folder and completes the save user profile operation. This is less common in DNS 11-11.5, but it occurs in all versions of DNS from time to time. When I closed down DNS yesterday I got the message in the second attachment below. Second time of closing worked OK. Chuck Runquist "What you are aware of you are in control of; what you are not aware of is in control of you." - Anthony de Mello -------------------------
