One of my clients, who I will not get a chance to see for several days, has a DNS problem: major latency problems, and frequent messages of "Attempting to recover from low system resources." This occurs while running DNS 11.5 Pro, Core I7-2860QM, 12 GB RAM. It's a brand new laptop.

What steps would you take to alleviate the problem? Which "fixes" are most likely to make a difference?

  1. Run the "Audio Setup Wizard" and check for sound system problems.
  2. Close all programs and do a cold reboot.
  3. In the Control Panel, optimize for best performance rather than best appearance.
  4. Create a new BestMatch II profile.

Without having had a chance to check out the situation, my guess is that the problem is probably related to the quality of the audio signal. I am open to hearing other theories.

I have rarely seen the "recovering from low system resources" message, so I am curious if anybody knows the circumstances that trigger this message.

Alan,

I'm working with two clients who are having exactly the same problem. I have my suspicions as to what is causing it, but rather than attempting to provide an explanation, my suggestions are as follows:

1.  Create a new user profile.

2.  Do not use Manage Vocabularies… to transfer the vocabulary from the original user profile to the new one. Use the Export custom word and phrase list…

3.  Skip training.

4.  Don't copy the original mycmds.dat or use the Export custom commands initially. Simply leave the default mycmds.dat created when you have them create a new user.

5.  Run that newly created user profile for at least a day and see if the problem persists with that new user profile.

If the problem resolves itself, let me know and post a copy of both Dragon logs from the old user profile and the new one.

If my suspicions are correct, the problem stems from a corrupted user profile, but the corruption is very subtle and seems to be coming from either an inflated user profile or subtle corruption in the Active Vocabulary.

As I said, I'm still not sure exactly what causes the problem, so it is essential to take it one variable at a time. It could have a couple of causes, but it's important to try to pin it down one step at a time. With regard to my clients, I can see the problem manifesting itself in the Dragon log, but the Dragon log does not give a clear indication of the cause itself. All that the Dragon log shows is a series of processes that may be inflating the amount of RAM that DNS is using and therefore eating up resources. Unlike of a better term I call it Dragon thrashing itself into a system resource problem.

We were experiencing occasional low system resource messages on our “apparently antique” Core i7 990x system running 24 Gb of RAM. Although it's too early to be certain, we suspect our problem may have been connected to what appears to be a poorly written Windows update which was repaired by another Windows update 48 hours ago. We haven't experienced the error since but it's a little too early in the game to call. We are only mentioning this because there is a chance that this problem is not related to NaturallySpeaking and may take care of itself.
