Question From VoiceRecognition Forum

Quote:
Im aware that the general opinion is that the Samson 77 is the best wireless around for accuracy. I can't seem to find them here in New Zealand. I can easily find the Plantronics CS 60 and could find the CS 50 which i assume is an older model. No mention i could find of the CS 55.
How accurate is the Cs 60 or CS 50. I see that its sold with the Nat speak 9 Wireless edition(CS 60), but is it worth pursuing???
I'm in a reasonably low level noise enviornment.

Although Plantronics makes a CS50 and CS60 wireless microphone we suspect that you are actually referring to the CS50-USB and CS60-USB microphone which are designed to work with out-of-the-box with speech recognition software. This CS50 and CS60 models do not include a USB soundcard which is why we refer to our CS55 as the Hybrid Plantronics CS55 wireless telephone/microphone.

The CS50 is not an older model. The CS50 and CS55 are designated as 110 volt. In New Zealand you would want to go with the 220 V CS60-USB. That is the only distinction that Plantronics makes between 50 and 60. We do not recommend purchasing a CS60 locally because it will not out-of-the-box work with NaturallySpeaking. The CS60-USB microphone works well with NaturallySpeaking and is an excellent microphone but is now on the bottom of our recommendation list which you will find on our Microphone Comparison Matrix. 1 of the problems that we have with the CS60-USB is that on average, once every 3 weeks the microphone disables itself. It's very easy to fix the problem but it's difficult to figure out which of the 3 problems need fixing so you wind up performing all 3 repairs. You have to reset the microphone by pressing a paper clip into the reset hole on the back of the unit, pair the unit by holding the black button and silver button down for 6 seconds and if that doesn't work, you have to unplug the AC adapter and the USB plug from your computer. You can then plug the USB plug back into your computer but need to leave the AC adapter off your unit for a few hours. One of those 3 fixes will work 99% of the time but it's a little bit aggravating having to go through all 3 even though they are quick and easy. We really do like this microphone but we feel that everyone should be aware of it’s shortcomings. The microphone sound card is also a little gritty towards the upper midrange and you can hear some of the grit during the playback when you run the Audio Setup Wizard but again, it is relatively minor.

Our most accurate and most noise canceling microphone is the Hybrid Samson Airline 77 wireless microphone which includes a 220 V option for New Zealand (although you'll still need to purchase a $10 plug adapter from your local electronics store). We would like to additionally point out that the US dollar is currently very weak so even if the Airline 77 was available in New Zealand, it would cost considerably more. We ship to Australia and New Zealand all the time and when we sell the Samson Airline 77 we include our $65 KnowBrainer Hands-free microphone at no additional charge to be used as a backup microphone. However, don't purchase our battery charger option because it is only 110 volt. The Airline 77 microphone runs about 14 hours on a single alkaline AAA battery. If you decide to go this route, we recommend going green (which New Zealand is already famous for) and purchasing a AAA battery charger locally.

You mentioned that you work in a low noise environment. You might consider the more economically priced Revolabs xTag wireless lapel microphone. It's extremely light, very comfortable (because it's a lapel microphone) and works everywhere because it doesn't require an AC current. The xTag is powered from the USB port on your computer and includes its own USB soundcard/charger.

PS: Note that when you purchase from a licensed speech recognition vendor you get an extra layer of NaturallySpeaking Technical Support and we take it one step further by including step-by-step instructions with each microphone we sell. We also preset the volume levels and add any required adapters so that your microphone will be speech recognition ready when delivered.

I must say that in the 2 years or so that I have been using my CS60-USB I have never experienced the problems mentioned. Perhaps I am lucky!

I don't use the AC adapter but charge it through the USB connection.

Perhaps that has something to do with it.

I agree with Rene. I've been using CS50 USBs for many months and only rarely have to fuss with them.

Lunis - Do you have the described problems with ALL the CS60-USB mics in your office - or only one (yours?)  If so - perhaps you have a defective mic?

Although we quoted the CS60-USB, because other than being 220 V it is exactly the same as the CS50-USB, we have received approximately 100 support phone calls on this microphone (including one very recent call). We have 2 CS50-USB microphones that we only use for test purposes. When this microphone was 1st released, we used it all the time. On average, our 2 microphones used to go out once every 3 weeks but we do use the AC adapter. We've also noted that you can run the microphone without the AC but after a few weeks, we have to plug it in for about 3 hours. It really doesn't take very long to go through all 3 fixes but we still find it a little bit irritating and feel compelled to warn people about this. It's hard for us to get exact figures but we believe that at least half of our customers have to perform a fix approximately every 3 weeks but you can run through all 3 fixes in about 20 seconds. We noted that none of these problems occur with the other Plantronics wireless mics.

Here is one of the lost posts.

I don't use the AC adapter but charge my CS60 USB through the USB connection.

The AC adapter is rated at 240Volts

I also use a CS-60-USB for Dragon. The AC-Adapter is fried, so i use it only with charging through des USB-Port. It works very well.

But one of our customers had those connection issues one time.

I have also been using the CS50-USB for about a year now and in general have been VERY happy with it.  I charge it through the USB connection only and have not had it crash yet.  I have had to replace the battery a month or so ago but it was relatively painless and these batteries are available and inexpensive on ebay or any discount battery store.
