I have a boom microphone connected to my laptop with a USB sound pod. I decided to see how well my built-in microphone worked on my laptop for use while I'm not at my desk. It is horrible to say the least. I now want to remove the laptop Dication Source because it automatically switches to the laptop built-in mic when I undock my laptop - but it doesn't automatically switch back to the USB mic when I re-dock it. It's extremely frustrating having to manually change dictation source each time I re-dock as I do it at least 10 times per day.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to delete a dictation source without deleting my whole profile.

Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Found this in that other forum

Don't know if this will help:

If you are deleting an entire profile, you would do so through the Manage User Profiles.

But if you just want to delete a sound source, click Profile on the DragonBar menu, followed by clicking Open User Profile.

Note that the Open User Profile menu may look a little overly complicated because it includes all of your sound sources and gives the appearance of being multiple users but is simply listing all of your sound sources.

Left click on the sound source you wish to delete, click the Source button and then select Delete.

Thanks. I, too, looked in the other forum. I found the same response.

However, when I follow the steps outlined, I don't see anything in regards to the Dictation Sources. If I click on the properties button, a form is displayed that lists the audio sources, but there's nothing you can do to "remove", "delete"...

From that other forum
http://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16432/~/how-to-reset-the-audio-calibration-on-a-user-profile-in-dns-13

In Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 there is not an option to delete dictation sources from a user profile. Instead, the “Reset audio calibration” feature was implemented as a means to reset the audio calibration on a user profile.

Be aware though:

Note:  By resetting the Acoustic Model you will lose significant adaptation data and this should only be done if absolutely necessary. There is no way to delete an Acoustic Model in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13.

This is a worthy issue for my post # 1000:

To delete a dictation source in Dragon 13, locate your user profile in Windows Explorer. This is typically in C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking13\Users\[your user name]. Open the folder "current". You will find several pairs of folders, typically called 2_1, 2_1_container; 2_2, 2_2_container. Other numbers are possible.

Each pair corresponds to one dictation source. To find out which one, open the file 2_x_container\aoptions.ini, where the source is listed by its friendly name, e.g. Philips SpeechMike III. To delete a source, simply delete the corresponding pair of folders.

Do that at your own risk :-)

With a Roaming User profile, you have to delete the folders both on the server and in the local copies.

Hope that helps, Stephan

Awesome 1000th posting and greatly appreciated. We had noted the collection of 2_1 and 2_1_container etc. files in our current folder but hadn't considered that they were dictation sources that could be removed. We have acquired quite a few dictation sources from testing. Nuance really should consider adding a Delete Dictation Source menu in their next release. We just added your recommendation to the Quick Tips ~ you better be right

Worked perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing. The only additional steps I would suggest for others attempting this are:

  1. make sure Dragon is not running. (I presume this is important.)
  2. make a copy/backup of the entire "Nuance" folder in ProgramData in case something goes wrong.

Really glad I didn't have to delete my profile!

Thanks again.

Dave

The solution of deleting the container sometimes works for me, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I cannot launch the profile anymore. Whatever you do, back up your previous profile before fiddling with it all.

(When it works, dictation quality is back to where it was, as I am properly back on the Sennheiser, rather than the laptop microphone.)

Thanks!

Hans

Thank you, your instructions worked for me. I thought I was a dunce but to find out that Nuance doesn't provide a way to delete a dictation source is bewildering to me. Although, I should not be surprised because I have owned  every piece of software they sell. They specialize in "almost great" software.

It would have been far more appropriate if Stephan had given credit and mentioned the source where he got this information from, but quite typically of him, he chose not to, making it look his own. Maybe in a little while, Lunis will provide even more, probably useful information to the public.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to delete a dictation source without deleting my whole profile.

Several months back Rudiger sent a few of us a script that effectively brought back the feature to remove dictation sources and thus avoid unnecessarily bloating profiles and storing redundant data.  It will be available via the UI with KnowBrainer 2015 most likely via the context menu in the system tray or an encrypted script

We will not make it available as as an editable script at the current time however as we will be protecting the integrity of the code as this is Rüdiger's intellectual property.  This is because all too often information and scripts given on the forum free of charge then mysteriously appear in other third-party applications and postings with no credit given, I have seen this is with my own scripts and features over the years.  The feature will look something like this after clicking on the relevant option on the context menu.  So if you are disabled, as one example, you will get this feature back free of charge.  Thanks Rüdiger very nice script.

THANK you Rüdiger Wilke for this amazing feature. We are rather surprised that Nuance didn't see the value of it. For anyone who is in the business of testing microphones, you can really get yourself into hot water with too many sound sources. As wonderful as the new Ver. 13 Manage Dictation Sources feature is, too many sound sources can destabilize a user profile.

We would like to thank Rüdiger for permitting us to add this feature into KnowBrainer 2015. Talk about great timing. This is one very fast clean “simple to use script” that we will probably need to use about twice a month. Very sweet!

If you are asking about when Rüdiger's awesome Remove Dictation Source command, it will be added to KnowBrainer 2015 when we release REV B within the next few weeks. We find it odd that Nuance didn't include this capability and really appreciate Rüdiger's effort as we had to use it about 2 days ago when beta testing a new headset microphone. We had simply acquired too many dictation sources which resulted in destabilizing our user profile.

I am about to upgrade from DNS 14 to DPI 15. Is Rüdiger's Remove Dictation Source command script available for purchase? - Jack

Unfortunately, Rüdiger's script no longer works but you will find a manual step-by-step approach in the Quick Tips when you search for “How to Delete a Dictation Source” which covers Dragon 13 - 15 (courtesy of Stephan Kuepper).

... stolen by Stephan Kuepper on the German forum that I run and where I (foolishly enough) discussed the manual approach in public before looking into automating it via scripting, if truth be told and as I have pointed out to Lunis before, in a wasted attempt obviously.

Jack Hines, since you asked, the script, or just any other generic script I have ever created for private use, is not for purchase, simply because a script of that kind isn't something you should put a price on, no matter how accomplished or useful it might be, from my perspective at least.

But, as the particular script went a fair bit beyond the typical string manipulating and key sending efforts which are usually posted in places like this one, I thought I had better avoid seeing it being copied into other people's assortments for free, so I didn't post it and asked Lindsay to obfuscate it when integrating it into KnowBrainer. But I wouldn't mind giving it away to individuals if not sharing it in public is made sure.

Lunis, I am not aware that the script stopped working, also because I never used it, as I have only been using the same dictation sources since back in 2008. If you could give me some details as to what happens when running it, what errors are reported (it does include error checking if my recollection is correct), I might look into fixing it.

Lunis, I haven't touched the script ever since I had created it, until you brought it up now. But I have just imported it into DPI 15 and it works without a flaw. So where does it go wrong?

Just tried this. For some reasons I had eight pairs of folder. Deleting seven of them removed 1.3 GB! And I had been getting messages about poor audio for no apparent reason and this has stopped.. EXCELLENT, thank you.
