I have a boom microphone connected to my laptop with a USB sound pod. I decided to see how well my built-in microphone worked on my laptop for use while I'm not at my desk. It is horrible to say the least. I now want to remove the laptop Dication Source because it automatically switches to the laptop built-in mic when I undock my laptop - but it doesn't automatically switch back to the USB mic when I re-dock it. It's extremely frustrating having to manually change dictation source each time I re-dock as I do it at least 10 times per day.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to delete a dictation source without deleting my whole profile.

Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Found this in that other forum

Don't know if this will help:

If you are deleting an entire profile, you would do so through the Manage User Profiles.

But if you just want to delete a sound source, click Profile on the DragonBar menu, followed by clicking Open User Profile.

Note that the Open User Profile menu may look a little overly complicated because it includes all of your sound sources and gives the appearance of being multiple users but is simply listing all of your sound sources.

Left click on the sound source you wish to delete, click the Source button and then select Delete.

Thanks. I, too, looked in the other forum. I found the same response.

However, when I follow the steps outlined, I don't see anything in regards to the Dictation Sources. If I click on the properties button, a form is displayed that lists the audio sources, but there's nothing you can do to "remove", "delete"...

From that other forum
http://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16432/~/how-to-reset-the-audio-calibration-on-a-user-profile-in-dns-13

In Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 there is not an option to delete dictation sources from a user profile. Instead, the “Reset audio calibration” feature was implemented as a means to reset the audio calibration on a user profile.

Be aware though:

Note:  By resetting the Acoustic Model you will lose significant adaptation data and this should only be done if absolutely necessary. There is no way to delete an Acoustic Model in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13.

This is a worthy issue for my post # 1000:

To delete a dictation source in Dragon 13, locate your user profile in Windows Explorer. This is typically in C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking13\Users\[your user name]. Open the folder "current". You will find several pairs of folders, typically called 2_1, 2_1_container; 2_2, 2_2_container. Other numbers are possible.

Each pair corresponds to one dictation source. To find out which one, open the file 2_x_container\aoptions.ini, where the source is listed by its friendly name, e.g. Philips SpeechMike III. To delete a source, simply delete the corresponding pair of folders.

Do that at your own risk :-)

With a Roaming User profile, you have to delete the folders both on the server and in the local copies.

Hope that helps, Stephan

Awesome 1000th posting and greatly appreciated. We had noted the collection of 2_1 and 2_1_container etc. files in our current folder but hadn't considered that they were dictation sources that could be removed. We have acquired quite a few dictation sources from testing. Nuance really should consider adding a Delete Dictation Source menu in their next release. We just added your recommendation to the Quick Tips ~ you better be right

Worked perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing. The only additional steps I would suggest for others attempting this are:

  1. make sure Dragon is not running. (I presume this is important.)
  2. make a copy/backup of the entire "Nuance" folder in ProgramData in case something goes wrong.

Really glad I didn't have to delete my profile!

Thanks again.

Dave

The solution of deleting the container sometimes works for me, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I cannot launch the profile anymore. Whatever you do, back up your previous profile before fiddling with it all.

(When it works, dictation quality is back to where it was, as I am properly back on the Sennheiser, rather than the laptop microphone.)

Thanks!

Hans

Thank you, your instructions worked for me. I thought I was a dunce but to find out that Nuance doesn't provide a way to delete a dictation source is bewildering to me. Although, I should not be surprised because I have owned  every piece of software they sell. They specialize in "almost great" software.

It would have been far more appropriate if Stephan had given credit and mentioned the source where he got this information from, but quite typically of him, he chose not to, making it look his own. Maybe in a little while, Lunis will provide even more, probably useful information to the public.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to delete a dictation source without deleting my whole profile.

Several months back Rudiger sent a few of us a script that effectively brought back the feature to remove dictation sources and thus avoid unnecessarily bloating profiles and storing redundant data.  It will be available via the UI with KnowBrainer 2015 most likely via the context menu in the system tray or an encrypted script

We will not make it available as as an editable script at the current time however as we will be protecting the integrity of the code as this is Rüdiger's intellectual property.  This is because all too often information and scripts given on the forum free of charge then mysteriously appear in other third-party applications and postings with no credit given, I have seen this is with my own scripts and features over the years.  The feature will look something like this after clicking on the relevant option on the context menu.  So if you are disabled, as one example, you will get this feature back free of charge.  Thanks Rüdiger very nice script.

THANK you Rüdiger Wilke for this amazing feature. We are rather surprised that Nuance didn't see the value of it. For anyone who is in the business of testing microphones, you can really get yourself into hot water with too many sound sources. As wonderful as the new Ver. 13 Manage Dictation Sources feature is, too many sound sources can destabilize a user profile.

We would like to thank Rüdiger for permitting us to add this feature into KnowBrainer 2015. Talk about great timing. This is one very fast clean “simple to use script” that we will probably need to use about twice a month. Very sweet!

If you are asking about when Rüdiger's awesome Remove Dictation Source command, it will be added to KnowBrainer 2015 when we release REV B within the next few weeks. We find it odd that Nuance didn't include this capability and really appreciate Rüdiger's effort as we had to use it about 2 days ago when beta testing a new headset microphone. We had simply acquired too many dictation sources which resulted in destabilizing our user profile.

Unfortunately, Rüdiger's script no longer works but you will find a manual step-by-step approach in the Quick Tips when you search for “How to Delete a Dictation Source” which covers Dragon 13 - 15 (courtesy of Stephan Kuepper).

... stolen by Stephan Kuepper on the German forum that I run and where I (foolishly enough) discussed the manual approach in public before looking into automating it via scripting, if truth be told and as I have pointed out to Lunis before, in a wasted attempt obviously.

Jack Hines, since you asked, the script, or just any other generic script I have ever created for private use, is not for purchase, simply because a script of that kind isn't something you should put a price on, no matter how accomplished or useful it might be, from my perspective at least.

But, as the particular script went a fair bit beyond the typical string manipulating and key sending efforts which are usually posted in places like this one, I thought I had better avoid seeing it being copied into other people's assortments for free, so I didn't post it and asked Lindsay to obfuscate it when integrating it into KnowBrainer. But I wouldn't mind giving it away to individuals if not sharing it in public is made sure.

Lunis, I am not aware that the script stopped working, also because I never used it, as I have only been using the same dictation sources since back in 2008. If you could give me some details as to what happens when running it, what errors are reported (it does include error checking if my recollection is correct), I might look into fixing it.

Rüdiger, we suspect that the 2 errors might be unique to our computer which is now 5 years old. Since this is your private solution, we're not handing it out to others but even with the 2 error flags, your solution still worked brilliantly. At the moment, we are a little slammed by DMPE 4 orders (released a few hours ago) and the occasional wrinkle which might keep us a little busy over the next few weeks.

Thanks for mentioning this, Lunis. As I have already indicated here or somewhere else, I have just started working on turning it into a stand-alone solution. And while I am at it, I will do some revamping and adding more features and flexibility to it.

I got a little side-tracked by getting involved with NatLink recently, but once I have something running reasonably well, you will be among the first to get a copy for testing.

Lunis, I haven't touched the script ever since I had created it, until you brought it up now. But I have just imported it into DPI 15 and it works without a flaw. So where does it go wrong?

Just tried this. For some reasons I had eight pairs of folder. Deleting seven of them removed 1.3 GB! And I had been getting messages about poor audio for no apparent reason and this has stopped.. EXCELLENT, thank you.

I recently used the procedure above and in the Quick Tips file (delete 2_2, 2_2 Container, etc) to delete some old unused dictation sources in Dragon 15. But the procedure is not complete because it does not specify the deletion of various backup folders and files. It messed up Dragon 15 so that Dragon protested whenever it tried to backup my profile. I posted a ticket on the Nuance website and received this response from Nuance -- which fixed the problem perfectly. I am posting it here to make my small contribution towards this excellent forum.

The Quick Tips file should probably also be updated.

After deleting the (e.g.) 2_2 folders and files, and references to them inside the various .ini files identified in the Quick Tips procedure, be sure to delete all of the temporary folders and files that also may contain references to the deleted dictation sources. Here is the procedure provided by a Nuance tech support person to overcome the error that Dragon encountered each time it tried to back up my profile (after I deleted a few unused dictation sources). This procedure solved the error condition perfectly.

1. Close Dragon
2. Press Windows key + E
3. Go to This Pc
4. Go to C:\Program Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\Users\< User name >
5. Delete any folder that beings with tb. The following folders need to be retained:

Backup - (may not exist)
Backup2 - (may not exist)
Current
dataarchive
6. Navigate to the "current" folder.
7. Delete any folder that beings with "t". The following folders must be retained:
General_
General__container
voice
voice_container

Try launching Dragon again.

HI

I cannot for the life of me understand why Nuance have removed this feature. We still have this issue. removing all the folders does not remove the dictation sources and often the profile no longer loads. We have integrated software and it offers every dictation source ever used with that profile plus the transcriber option. Very annoying and we cannot get rid of them.

Thompson 2009, Nuance never included this option in the new Manage Dictation Sources utility (Ver. 14 and 15) which was an improved feature that was designed to replace editing sound sources through your user profile. The new Manage Dictation Sources introduced the ability to add multiple USB and other sound sources. The older user profile only allowed you to use 1 USB source, 1 microphone and line input etc. but as you pointed out, Nuance really should have included an option to forget sound sources too. This has been a real pain in our collective keister because we are always testing a new sound system but Rüdiger bailed us out with an effective utility which we found to be very helpful. Since it is not a public utility, you will need to ask Rüdiger.

Hi Lunis

Thank you for the reply. This is going to create a real issue with our system as we have thousands of users all over the country and not being able to easily remove a microphone source is a real pain as you have said.

Paul.

Well, Rudiger's utility provides certain protections that the manual instructions don't. To wit, don't touch or delete any files that refer to or are involved with a dictation source actually in use! Even if Dragon is closed while you do this, you don't want to touch the source Dragon will try to load on startup. Best to do the procedure while Dragon is running (hence, Rudiger's Dragon advanced script can "know" which source to avoid -- and doesn't even present it as an option for deleting).

In the old days, the DPG15.1 "Choose Microphone" dialog (I think it was called something else in DNS13Pro) would show the "unavailable" sources there so you could be safe in knowing what to delete. Now, you have to be more careful with the manual procedure. Be darn sure (especially with roaming profiles) that the dictation source really should be deleted from all machines the roaming profile is used on. Do one at a time. Test, and repeat. For me, I've noticed the same mic is sometimes listed twice -- but only one works. Better delete the right one! But really, I don't bother too much, anymore. When my profile gets bloated, I create a new one. With the data distribution tool, my commands, custom words and alternate vocabularies are automatically imported at once. No sweat, except re-initializing the mics on each machine I use.

By the way, for the record, the file structure Stephan and Rudiger (first?) noted for storing mic source info in a profile was known by me independently in 2007 as I wondered out loud about profile bloat and what to do about it with my roaming profile. I then discovered for myself those directories linked to the audio source names (as described, it's right out there in the open - clear text) and began to trim them manually. This is not to diminish any of the fine work and contributions of others, but just to concur with Rudiger that information is not a protectable intellectual property right (unless it is kept secret). IP rights protect implementations (patent) or embodiments (copyright) of information. We can all be happy with what information folks share here (good, bad, or indifferent), and I respect Rudiger's desire to keep certain things from being publicly disseminated (he does very fine work, and it costs him time and effort that he is not (or used to not be) remunerated for). Many, many folks have contributed "free" info here in these forums, and I'd like that to continue. But if every coding answer or help comes with a price, we're all diminished. In that, Lunis can be commended as he shares his proprietary KB commands liberally (with the instruction that it may well work in Dragon advanced scripting, too, so you don't even need KB to use them).

Actually, I am planning on turning my scripted version of the solution into a C++ stand-alone app, so as to do away with dodgy scripting, digitally sign the app and wrap it into an activation module so as to copy-protect it. It will be called DragonSources.

This utility will hopefully make life easier for many who take issue with the fact that there is no built-in way to remove the garbage left behind from unused dictation sources. And it will be ready to use for everyone by just clicking on it, without any scripting facilities or capabilities involved. And it will operate flawlessly.

It will (have to) come at a price, though. Selling it, rather than giving it away, isn't meant to compensate for my time and efforts, but merely to minimally cover the costs I have spent on purchasing the digital certificate, the licensing software and the annual fee for the activation server. (Yes, activating and deactivating is handled over the internet.)

DragonSources will cost £7.50 per license.

Hi

Just to let you know, i have found out how to easily remove any unused microphone sources so our app no longer offers those choices.

Paul, your solution would doubtlessly be appreciated by the forum membership, if you have the time.

Hi Lunis

To explain, we have our own integrated software with dragon and if more than 1 source is installed in dragon, it offers the user a source box which we do not want. i discovered that to stop this, i just had to remove the line in the main acoustic.ini file under [ACOUSTICS]. Example 2 2=2_2 and the second device is no longer offered and the user does not get prompted to select a source. If the entire device needs removing then delete the container folders as already mentioned but just removing this line for each device installed, dragon no longer offers multiple devices which is perfect for what i require. If you keep the container folders and later re-add for example 2 2=2_2 the device continues to work as normal.

I used the solution above -- removing the program data folders for the two microphones I did not want -- and it worked. Dragon seems to have "forgotten" them, for all practical purposes. They had been interfering with the use of my preferred dictation source, and that is no longer happening. Funny thing, though, when I click on Manage Profiles and then open Properties for the profile in question, the two deleted dictation sources are still listed on Properties. Is there any way to delete their names from off the Properties page?

Welcome to the World's Most Popular Speech Recognition Forum

Unfortunately, Nuance neglected to include, what should have been obvious, an appropriate menu item to remove a sound source. As you can probably well imagine, as a soundcard/microphone beta tester, we can easily accumulate 40 unwanted sound sources which can crash Dragon 15. If you want to completely remove your sound sources and any references, you'll find one option in the Quick Tips when you search for “How to Delete a Dictation Source”

As an alternative, you could download DragonSources, install it, activate a free 15 days trial on first launch, and delete any left-over dictation source by selecting it in the panel and clicking a button. Below is what it looks like when started.

Do note that it will also tell you how much disk space is used by each dictation source, as well as the disk space used by DRA files, and the profile as a whole.

Additionally, although non-related, it will give you control over many other, and the most critical, Dragon options, all in one place.
