I've often wished that I could see some video clips of how the masters work with Dragon. By masters, I mean all the long-time guys like Lunis, Lindsay, Edgar, PG, Phil, Tigerfeet, RW, Mark, Mav, Alan, Rob, Quintjin (Natlink, Unimacro, etc.).

I suppose I could contribute too, but I don't think I'm in the same class of voice expert as many of those named above because I have full use of my hands and mouse and am quickly useless if I restrict myself to voice only. For example, I am not even facile with moving the cursor around and editing text in a full select-and-say editor.

Videos would be very helpful to newbies and probably interesting to curious people (like me) to see what's actually possible with voice when working with the computer, email, word documents, KB for basic scripting by voice, or Python/Unimacro and visual studio for programming.

I've watched a couple of Mark's YouTube videos on programming, but often had problems understanding what was going on because I didn't recognize command names and couldn't always see the extra monitor screens. His videos weren't really intended to teach someone what was possible, which probably explains my difficulty.

Is anyone else curious like I am? What do you all think about a thread of short videos that show masters at work with voice? If everyone contributed a couple of 5 minute videos, we would soon have 20 videos to watch and learn from. Cheers, Kevin

I was inspired by Mark’s posting not have video on how he moves across the screen with his grid pasted to his monitor. Thanks Mark!

 

I thought I would keep the trend going by posting a video of my own. In this video I show how I jump to a folder using scripts that I just got working this morning. I have full use of my hands, keyboard, and mouse, so those are not issues for me. I am trying to use voice to become more productive than I can using the normal keyboard and mouse actions.

 

The first part of the video shows how I jump to a folder in a tab in the file manager in an intelligent way. The software figures out if a tab holding the folder exists, creates one if it does not, and jumps to one if one does exist. I'm using a technique of "typing" in a pathname to the filemanager to jump to a location. (I learned that method from Alan Cantor some time ago. Thanks Alan! It works great.)

 

The second part of the video shows how I activate applications and move them to named locations on the screen (“front” is such a location). I named the locations because I always like my applications in the same place on the screen.

 

The third part of the video shows some Microsoft Word up operations that I use regularly to set the styles of document headings and position images beside the text in the document. The video shows how the software resizes the image, gives it the right attributes, moves it to the right and border, and draws a border around the image. In addition, the video shows how scripts can distribute a series of images vertically to make them look nice in the document.

 

For the record, my code is spread across Dragon scripting, Microsoft VBA, C#, DOS batch files, and some scripting within other applications (KnowBrainer, Adobe, or XYPlorer as in this video). It’s a hodge-podge of scripts.

I hope you'll cut me some slack! I've never tried to make a recording like this before (audio & video) and I had to find some software to do the job! After trying out a few I eventually settled on SpaceX for the recording and OpenShot to do editing (although both of these clips are unedited). If I were ever to do this again I would script it out with scenes and dialog! Both clips were created entirely hands-free; DragonUsage1 is a second take and DragonUsage2 required 8 takes to get as far as I got (and I'm not extremely happy with it).

The first video (DragonUsage1 - 7:21 long) shows examples of some common tasks in my daily routine - using Chrome to surf the web, Visual Studio to edit code and Notepad for plain text creation (I don't do much styled text anymore so did not show the use of Word nor OpenOffice Writer). Cory J (my Correct That replacement) is also featured at the end using Notepad for dictation and correction. Here is the link in my Dropbox:

++10 Edgar! Wow, your videos amazed me. They were exactly what I was hoping for when I posted this thread. I'm sure your videos will expand minds for a long time into the future because you show how easy it is to move around and get things done. I'm almost totally useless in Visual Studio except for a few SendKeys scripts to fire a few menu items, whereas you've got error windows open on multiple monitors and can jump around easily. I'll have to investigate your "letters" command and get myself to memorize an alphabet when I get the time. Your 4-box video format to show your three monitors was educational too - I've never seen that done before. (I just used SnagIt to make my video.) Thank you for the visual on your grid tool too - seeing it in action has way more punch than just reading about it in the forum. Thank you so much for your contribution! You're clearly one of the masters.

"SpaceX" - that was either a speak-o or just more old age creeping in… I meant to say "ShareX" it's open source and on GitHub:

For my simple needs I can operate it entirely hands-free. In the default mode it has a minor (but possibly surmountable without changing the code) problem with keyboard shortcuts - it inserts global shortcuts (not application-specific) to start recording a video, make a screen grab and make a window capture (start recording a video is "shift print screen"). Even when the application is NOT running, this overrides ALL the OS-built-in "print screen" varieties. If I'm going to continue to use this application I will need to circumvent that by changing these shortcuts so that they do not interfere with my HIGHLY used macros which make use of the OS-built-in varieties. I also do not like the fact that they are not application-specific and work even when ShareX has not been started. On my 1920x1080 monitor the application’s interface font is way too small - once I get the application compiling that will be the second thing I address. If I go any further the third thing I would address would be to drastically modify the GUI so that it is voice-actuation friendly.

I'm probably not really a "master". You might have heard of the expression "Jack-of-all-trades, master of none" - that, or "dilettante" might better describe me. I'm 70 years old and mental challenges, that used to be trivial to overcome, now require some effort. Twenty years ago I might well have been a "master" in a number of trades - including programming - but now I find myself spending more time reading reference material to remind myself "how to" than actually writing productive code.

Hi Edgar, I'm only a few years behind you, and I know the feeling well of spending time reading my old notes and references to remember how to do something. I think a person just gets so much knowledge in their head over the years that the brain starts flushing it from RAM to disk to make room for current information. As best I can, that's why I document my code and dictate notes into Word to make reloading it into my head easier.


Thank you for the ShareX link. ShareX records multiple monitors at once, yes? And then did you chop and edit your three monitors into the 4-cell grid manually, or did OpenShot somehow do that automatically? I thought the 4-cell display of 4 monitors was very helpful.

I tried a small handful of recorders; some (like ShareX) record "all or nothing" in the way of monitors. Others allow you to pick and choose or only allow you to record the Primary monitor. It's not always easy from the review blurbs to tell what any given application does in this regard. In the case of ShareX it records the entire "desktop" which Windows defines as a rectangular region just large enough to encompass all attached monitors (whether they are powered on or not). In my case I have 3 monitors, all the same resolution (1920x1080, all at 100% scaling) arranged:

where 1 is primary, 2 is secondary and 3 is tertiary. Unfortunately, Windows includes that region below the primary monitor, to the right of the tertiary monitor, as part of the "desktop". In an old map this would be marked "Here be dragons!". It is quite possible to move the mouse into that region and windows often seem to end up down there "accidentally". It's even possible to arrange her monitors (virtually) so that they do not line up - neither horizontally nor vertically - the only requirement is that any given monitor must have at least some tiny common border area with some other monitor.

As for OpenShot - it ended up being a real nightmare, causing massive conflicts with Dragon. I ended up having to uninstall it. Windows 8 came with a built-in video editor - lightweight but which worked just fine. As I recall, Microsoft stop distributing it; but it, or something like it, should be available.

Here is a short video that shows how I enter data into an Excel spreadsheet for my time log. I used several homebrew commands to enter the text and automatically tab between cells. Some commands emit the dictation entitled case, some with leading case, and some with no special casing at all.

Naturally, because it is a demo, there are a few errors and misrecognitions!

One of the interesting things is that this video shows chained commands in action.

The benefit of chained commands is that you do not have to wait around for Dragon to recognize or execute your first command before you issue a second command. In this video, I issue four commands that are chained together.

The downside of chained commands is that if you botch any one of the commands (which I do), the whole utterance must be repeated.

I catch the incoming text, parse it on the comma/comma boundaries, then loop over the list of commands and dispatch them one at a time. Of course, there are a zillion Dragon scripting/C#/ExcelVBA details within that simple structure.

That is an awesome idea. I would also like to see some very brief basic videos on how people do useful everyday things using voice and all the other programs like Knowbrainer, Speech productivity, DragonCapture etc.

It would be good if a new category was created called something like how "I use voice". For example, I am an online university instructor. I wouldn't mind doing a simple video on how I use speech programs to post and respond to student postings.

Thanks for your comment. Speech productivity has always been the best way to dictate, see and edit. But, that ability to transfer and read at the same time makes it a killer app if you are doing alot of text box inputting.I also use it for speed grading. That means I dictate into the SP all in one box and that becomes the student comment on their gradebook. If you need to be 1000% confident that what you wanted to write is what they see, the SP box is awesome.

The thing about Windows speech recognition if you set up the grammars it works perfectly. It's just the dictation that is lacking.

Dragon stops hanging as soon as the modal form is dismissed in Visual Studio.

Long before Kevin started the thread, I had begun doing a DragonCapture video, the first one, for that matter, and definitely long overdue. I would never have guessed the amount of time it takes, especially if you are new to this, but want to make it become kind of appealing.

Just this weekend, something seemed to manifest as "accomplished", but the overall consensus on the preview front, including mine, so far being that it has simply become too long, too ponderous, or something along these lines. So basically, it will need a complete redo.

However, so as to make parts of the material not go to waste completely, I decided to post a spin-off dealing with the overall concept to DragonCapture and its origin here:

I watched it and found it to be very informative. Yes, it is a bit long, and that in part is because you spend a lot of time on the Dictation Box and the Knowbrainer Force Dictation command. Maybe you should just do a separate video focusing solely on DragonCapture.

I don't use DragonCapture simply because (1) I am cheap and (2) I am retired, and therefore have my choice of applications and rarely use applications that are not Dragon-friendly. Having said that, I can certainly see why DragonCapture could be quite helpful for many users.

I've created my fair share of demonstration videos through the years (not counting the hundreds of music videos I created before that). And indeed if you want your video to look somewhat professional it's usually a much a more time-consuming and cumbersome process than expected (particularly if you have physical limitations like in my case). Definitely not something to be taken lightly.

That being said, it remains an ongoing, but interesting learning process for sure.

The reason for this being, and there is no doubt about that, if you are German, you are compelled to aspire to being systematic and complete, and to view things from a historic angle, but I am working on it, and started getting me some assistance already.

I well understand your reasoning also as far as add-ons in general. It is definitely a niche product, and always just the second-best way to get things done.

I agree with Edgar that the video is done quite professionally, albeit a bit lengthy in the first half.

 

Whlie DragonCapture makes it look as if you are dictating directly into an unsupported target application I was wondering how you handle correction?

In the regular dictation box, you can navigate and correct by voice to your heart's desire until you transfer the (corrected) text, but I'm unsure what would happen if you try to correct a phrase after it has been auto-pasted by DC.

 

Could you please elaborate a bit if correction by voice is possible with DragonCapture?

Mav, blame it on the German mindset, which you are familiar with most likely.

 

 

It is just an illusion. Not even DragonCapture could make a nonsupported target application Select-and-Say, and thus ready for editing after the fact.

 

 

There is a lot more to it than meets the eye in this video, where only AutoPaste mode was demonstrated. When switching off AutoPaste, it basically works along the lines of the hidden or remote dictation box in the medical versions, although fully automated and auto-detecting when it needs to move into action.

But some food for thought:

When Dragon uses "dumb dictation" into an unsupported target window by emulating keyboard input (if I'd invest enough time I'd probably find out how to achieve this with Thunderbird), each utterance is being transferred into the target window by playing the keys the recognized text consists of - similar to your auto paste.

If you haven't clicked the mouse or used the keyboard, Dragon still knows what the last text and cursor position in the target window is and thus even a "correct that" or "scratch that" usually works.

So if you'd save the recognized utterances for the target window you might be able to achieve something similar...

I just tested "dumb dictation", aka NaturalText, in Thunderbird. While "scratch that" works, "correct that" doesn't. The main problem with NaturalText being that Dragon loses it ever so often, and without any warning. The current workaround of choice is to edit nsuser.ini. If you do a search for it on the this forum, you will find a myriad of postings dealing with it.

 

In DragonCapture, I have integrated a of way dealing with NaturalText, programmatically, not by writing the nsuser.ini, in such ways that NaturalText is off when the DragonCapture is showing and thus active, and NaturalText is on when the box is hidden and thus not active. So you will get permanent control of NaturalText along with it, as a side-effect. I did this to make sure that they don't compete with each other, although it may not be necessary, because DragonCapture seems to take preference, as well over the Dragon Dictation Box.

 

I am already saving the recognition results passed to DragonCapture, sort of. I am using a SAPI 4 dictation object, along with a SAPI 4 text object, to handle this, so I might as well expand on it. The implementation, basically, equates to a hidden document which goes on until it is reset. Therefore I called it "The Remote & Continuous Dictation Box".

 

However, the problem starts when dealing with random target text boxes, which are always "on the other side of this airtight hatchway". so to speak. So far, the only thing I can deal with safely is to cut back the last utterance both in the target window and in the hidden buffer by deploying the DragonCapture command "remove this".

 

This ultimate goal of adding more editing facilities is on the horizon, although at the far back end.
