Important Notice for Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4

Nuance has formally announced the "End-of-Sale for Dragon Medical Practice Edition" effective December 31, 2020.  This means no new or additional licenses may be purchased after this date.  The official Nuance Maintenance period for these products will remain active until December 31, 2022. No maintenance or support services will be provided for Dragon Medical Practice Edition products after the end of 2022.

What does this mean for my software?

Your Dragon Medical software will continue operating after the end-of-sale date. 

You will not be able to purchase additional licenses for new employees after December 31, 2020.  New users will need to purchase the Dragon Medical One software

Nuance will continue to provide remedial software patches and fixes for Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4 software up until December 2022

Operability of Dragon Medical Practice Edition is not guaranteed after December 2022

1. We saw this Australian announcement but we don't believe DMPE 4.3 sales will be discontinued at the end of December; at least in the US/Canada. Nuance typically honors sales until stock is depleted.

2. Referring to DMO as a superior product is misleading. It would have been more accurate for Nuance to state that DMO includes advantages that are not available in DMPE 4. However, DMPE 4 also has a number of significant advantages that are not available in DMO.

3. Our preference would be for DMO to include the missing DMPE 4 features such as Advanced Scripting command capability, artificial intelligence commands, the ability to transcribe a recording, to name a few.

4. This is not the 1st time Nuance tried to discontinue DMPE 2 (at the time). The last time Nuance made this attempt, small practices simply refused to purchase DMO. We suspect Nuance took a financial hit and had to reverse their decision. We wouldn't be surprised if it happens again but DMO has also benefited from a number of significant improvements. We will have to wait and see…

5. One last biggie… A full copy of DMPE 4 is $1600 and and could potentially last many years because there are no other expenses (beyond a microphone and computer). DMO includes a free PowerMic III microphone but requires a minimum one-year lease to the tune of $1614 for the 1st year and $99 a month forever. Nuance puts a good spin on DMO but $1188 per year is a significant rotating expense.

For me, DMO not having Advanced Scripting capability is a non-starter. That said, most docs don't use custom commands--and don't know what they are missing!
