HI, I am helping someone remotely who I cannot physically meet with due to covid. He is using dragon pro 15 on a win 10 home laptop computer - and has had issues with the usb mics he is using. Each one is recognized initially and works throughout the system including dragon - but then eventually the mic stops working - everywhere - if a new mic is used - it is then recognized. This has happened with 3 mics in a row Any advice? Thanks! Karen |

Windows tends to lose USB connections by powering them off if they aren't used in while, so as to save power. Changing the power rules for the USB hub under the Device Manager typically helps, but is a little involved. You will also be better off using a dedicated USB port. A simple, temporary fix might be disconnecting and reconnecting the device.

Rüdiger is correct in noting that the procedure is somewhat involved but you will find our 10 steps for permanently locking your computer's USB ports when you click the Quick Tips, at the top of this page and search for Prevent Windows 10 From Losing It's Connections. ------------------------- Forum Mission Statement |

The headset sound still works, just not the mic - i forgot to include that important piece of info -also he is a frequent user of both the mic and headset - as he is in front of his laptop all day in a nursing home -
so I am assuming the usb power is not the issue? or could it still be? thank you so much for your help!!! Karen |

Speakers and microphones are individual devices, as far the Device Manager. So the advice may be still be valid. On the other hand, it is really unlikely that a couple of USB microphones stop working in a row, if you think about it. -------------------------

Have you tried using a different USB port to plug in the microphone (in case the problem is a faulty port)?

yes, have tried different ports, starting / restarting - user is pretty knowledgeable but at the mercy of support from others who are not.. i followed the quick tips advice above to change the power options on the system and usb hubs, had him unplug the mic - restart and plug in - to no avail - he plugged in a new mic and it worked... this has been the case each time - i agree the mics aren't bad - it's something with the system - not sure how often system is shutdown and restarted - every few days is my guess - and if that has anything to do with it. Thanks again for all of your support!!!!
